Second Shipping Union RMT protest at Condor Ferry in Portsmouth today

The RMT have this morning organised the 2nd protest at Portsmouth Port over the alleged low wages from Condor Ferries of just £2.35 an hour to Ukrainian Seafarers.

Obviously such a low payment would cause a major problem to British workers trying to seek employment.

In Weymouth, Condor are currently trying to seek a 10 Million pound investment by Weymouth and Portland Council for a major refit to Weymouth Harbour so that it would be able to accommodate their new ferry. It is much larger than the one currently in use. WPBC are currently reviewing various options and have indicated they will not be paying 10 Million pound from their own funds. That problem rumble's on, but I don't expect they will get much sympathy if this pay allegation is true.

RAF Careers Beach Volleyball Classic Weymouth Beach 1st - 3rd August 2014

Welcome back to the RAF Careers team who have been excellent sponsors of the Beach Volleyball in Weymouth over the years. It is an exceptionally well organised event, a credit to the RAF and all those that help to run it. (Being Ex RAF I have to say that Wink Wink) Seriously though it is a brilliant event and does attract the top beach volleyball players.

This year is slightly different in the fact that the 1st August will be dedicated to Dorset and Hampshire Championship and is open to players from both counties, age over 16 and not taking part in the main event on the Saturday or Sunday. So it is being seen as local development for up and coming players and the organisers are keen to see as many as possible taking part. It begins on Friday at 2pm

The main event is of course over the Weekend and it is spilt into two Division One and Two, the system is all pretty easy to follow but a bit long winded for this little blog so if you want to know more about registration  you should go to The RAF Careers Volleyball Website  Closing Date 25th July 2014

This is good event for Weymouth, lots of players staying for the weekend, more good publicity, and its FREE to watch, and as I said before the standard is very high indeed. Over the weekend it starts quite early and goes on quite late, so hard to miss. I think the final times (on the Sunday) slipped a bit last year, hardly surprising, so I won't give the final times. If you are interested in watching a final I am sure you will be able to get that information from the organisers on the beach. There is commentary on all the  show court matches which is very helpful for the public.

Matchstick Fleet back on Display Nothe Fort 30th July to 26th August 2014

Matchstick Model Fleet is back at Nothe Fort No Extra Charge 1st - 15th June 2014
The Amazing Phil Warren age 83 this year,  has really spent most of his life building and displaying this amazing display of matchstick model ships. He has brought them back at Nothe Fort from 30th July to 26th August 2014

You can see the display for free really as there is no extra charge on the normal admission fee which is

Adult £7  Senior Citizen £6  Child 5 to 15 £1  and Under 5's go FREE.

Matchstick Model Fleet is back at Nothe Fort No Extra Charge 1st - 15th June 2014It is a excellent Fort to see anyway and a great walk from town. (Don't take your car if you are staying in Weymouth, it's much more fun to walk) Go around the harbour, past the Old Rooms pub, past the Weymouth Lifeboat Centre and then up the steps to Nothe Gardens.

Here are fantastic views of Weymouth from one side and Portland from the other. At the top of the Gardens is Nothe Fort, which you can't possibly miss! Go through the tunnel and drawbridge. It is open everyday from 10.30am. Last Entry is one hour before closing at 5.30pm, so 4.30pm last entry.

I have only put a tiny picture of the display here because it is MASSIVE and you will be surprised and amazed when you see it. It is well worth a trip and great for the Children to run around the Gardens. You can climb up the turrets at the Fort and take some great photos of Weymouth and Portland from here.

Last thing to note is that the Fort is run by Volunteers so give them a smile and say hello, they are there to show off Weymouth's Nothe Fort and it makes their day to see smiling faces I can assure you.

Commander of HMS Portland Sarah West Sent Home from Deployment

Commander of HMS Portland Sarah West Sent Home from Deployment
18th May 2013 in Weymouth
The Daily Mail are this morning reporting that the Commander of HMS Portland Sarah West has been sent home while an investigation takes place over an alleged affair on board the ship.

Commander West can be seen here in Weymouth taking the salute during the Freedom of Weymouth & Portland Parade in May 2013. She was the first female Royal Navy Commander and took command of HMS Portland in May 2012.

Link to Daily Mail Story 26th July 2014

From my experience in the military with these kinds of sensitive matters, the single person (if a married person is involved) is usually the person who is removed from the situation. You might ask, it is strange that the Commander is removed and not the other officer? It is not known if the officer involved is married or single, read into that what you will. I would be very surprised indeed if the other officer is single. In fact amazed. But I do stress that information has not been released.

Edit. Well no surprise to see that the other half of the relationship was in fact the No 3 in charge of the ship and a married man. This is really messy, and if proven I can't see a way back for Commander West she will probably have to resign her commission, what a shame for a glittering career in total ruins Here is the follow up from the Daily Mail

Nothe Fort Home Front WWII Weekend 26th 27th July 2014

Nothe Fort Home Front WWII Weekend 26th 27th July 2014
The Nothe Fort will be holding one of its special weekends at the end of July. On the 26th and 27th they have another brilliant history lesson staging a Home Front Weekend.

The Northamptonshire Home Guard will be mounting a display of how it used to be done. Rifle drill and marching practice. They will have lots of war time communications, bomb disposals, rations, and all the things that you associate with the problems that the Home Front had to encounter during World War II

They have a Morse Code system set up, I wonder if they have anyone that can send on it?  Just to let them know I can!  If you want someone to send then just email me.  Anyway they have lots of interesting stands, even a hairdresser, also military vehicles. Also music by the Ukalaleans and the Switch Quartet, and stars from Weymouth at War The Decadettes.

Its tremendous value at £5 and £3 for Children (Under 5's go Free) Its entertaining and also very educational. Great fun. The Fort will be open from 10.30am until 4.30pm both days.
